When our country called for brave young men and women, many from Wagon Mound and the surrounding rural communities stepped up to proudly serve. We have had veterans serve in Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan and may others. Military service affects small towns much more intimately than large cities.
Two Wagon Mound High School graduates, former marines, were inspired to build this memorial in honor of veterans particularly those with Wagon Mound roots. The memorial was built with funding strictly from donations and volunteers. The dedication was held September 5, 2009.
Since this dedication in 2009, a Veteran’s Memorial Service is held each year on the Saturday morning of Bean Day. This year, we are hosting a full Military, Veteran & Law Enforcement Day. Military and Law Enforcement Recruiters will be set up on our main street. There will also be Veteran Organizations that are bringing resources to our rural area. Keep checking back here and our social media for announcements on those organizations and recruiters that will be joining us.
If you are a Veteran Owned business or Organization that supports Military, Veteran, Law Enforcement, and First Responders please contact us 505-918-6469, we would be honored for you to be part of our day.
We hope you can join us this year on September 5, 2020 at 9:00am for our Memorial Service. Following the Memorial Service, sign up for our first annual Ruck March.
See below for our Fundraising Brick Project for information about purchasing a Veteran’s brick that will be placed in this Memorial Park. This exciting project began in 2014 and will be ongoing for several years to come.
The Bean Day Association is unleashing a project that’ll raise funds for the entity and also add to the beauty of our beloved village. Introducing the “Brick Project”. Wagon Mound-area veterans and WM families/citizens and former citizens will be able to purchase a 4″ x 8″ brick (or 8″ x 8″ brick) in honor of a loved one, a family, yourselves, anyone can aid in this cause. Bricks are $75 (4×4) each. A few WM veterans have purchased their brick already! All veteran’s bricks will be placed at the WM Veteran’s Memorial Park; a neatly designed walkway/landscaping will accommodate these bricks. WM families/citizen’s bricks will be placed in other areas around town (sites to be determined). This project will be on-going for the next few years, but we want to start now. The company we have chosen is “Bricks R Us”. Check them out at bricksrus.com and see some samples. The 4×4 bricks have three lines of text, 18 characters per line. The order form will appear here within a few days, be on the lookout! For more information, or to have a form mailed to you, contact: Bean Day Association/PO Box 216/Wagon Mound, NM 87752.
